The reformist landslide

Iran is a key player in the heart of the Middle East and Western Asia. In addition to its obvious strategic importance, Iran is also a champion of the self-perception of Shia causes throughout the Islamic world. However, Iranian policy is difficult to manage, with a complex and complicated structure a reality on the ground. And Iranian politicians are very aware.
The recent presidential election and the second overwhelming victory of Hassan Rouhani are more than ever a true example of such complexity that was often lost by foreign analysts in Iran. As such, the Iranian people still surprises world public opinion with complexity and pragmatism. Despite a highly erroneous electoral system, where elections are neither fair nor free, Iranian voters participated heavily in the presidential elections with a 75 percent turnout. More than 40 million votes Friday 19 May, the Iranian Interior Ministry reported, a number greater than the 56 percent share in the US elections in 2016 and the 65 percent last French elections.
The reason is simple: supporters of current President Hassan Rouhani, a candidate for a second term, came to power and to stop the election of the ultra-conservative opponent, Ebrahim Raisi, caretaker of the Imam Reza shrine in the city Of Mashhad and member of the supreme leader circle of confidence. As such, once again, the Iranians have voted against a candidate who was considered favoured by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This has become a model known to the people of Iran since the 2009 presidential election and the tragic events that followed.
However, this year’s presidential elections in Iran were politically and economically more important and significant than the overwhelming victory of Rouhani in 2013. First, in the eyes of many Iranians, this election was a means to reaffirm and strengthen the nuclear Of 2015 between Iran, the United States and five other world powers. Secondly, the re-election of Rouhani in the landslide is presented to Europeans, and especially the Trump administration as an expression of the moderation and peaceful will of the Iranian people.
