Man the battlestations

It didn’t take more than about 4 minutes for Fred Thompson’s detractors to start throwin mud, and throw the mud they are. After the tone of Thompson’s buzz reached a peak last week in Wonkosphere, one day after his formal annoucement, it has come steadily down since.
The following graph shows the tone of Fred’s buzz over the last 2 weeks; red is from conservative bloggers and blue from liberal bloggers.

Since 9/5, the red line (tone from conservative bloggers) has gone straight down. Wizbang pretty much sums up opposition strategy: “Over the next few weeks, I intend to start taking what record Fred Thompson has apart, piece by piece and revealing that the proclaimed “conservative” alternative is nothing more than just another Washington hack.”
Some of the buzz… An anti-Thompson web site has been linked to supporters of Mitt Romney, although Romney himself claims no knowledge of the site… The Plank reports “Fred Thompson billed a few hours of work on behalf of two Libyan intelligence agents charged with (and one of them later convicted of) the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.” … Supporters are complaining that Thompson needs more zest in his presentations…
Thompson made some contraversial remarks about the importance of Osama bin Laden… Bloggers are questioning Fred’s faith… There are interesting hypotheses flying around concerning Thompson’s refusal to debate Mike Huckabee one-on-one (he’s getting hair implants)… Finally Andy Borowitz puns, “Saying that he was “totally exhausted and drained,” former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson withdrew from the race for the Republican presidential nomination today.
How’s Thompson’s looking in the polls today? New data from Florida shows him in second with slightly more than half the support Giuliani has; in Georgia it’s flipped, with Fred in first and Rudy in second.
