Smart money still likes Clinton
by WonkoKevin
It is often said that bettors will give you the best lowdown on a competitive situation because they have no vested ideological interest in the outcome, but have a lot of money riding on it. So what are the odds-makers saying about the U.S. presidential race? There’s a great site called BestBetting which let’s us know where the candidates are in the horse race.
Hillary Clinton is still by far the smart money choice, followed distantly by Rudy Guiliani and Barack Obama. Here are the best odds you can get, low and high values shown:
Clinton, 0.50:1 to 0.66:1
Obama, 3:1 to 6:1
Giuliani, 4.25:1 to 5:1
Romney 7:1 to 10:1
Huckabee, 10:1 to 16:1
Paul, 14:1 to 25:1
Edwards, 16:1 to 25:1
Check out some of the trends in 2007. Obama is shown in black and Clinton in red. We can see that Obama has had two ”slips”, and is actually still not down to the odds he had in June. Clinton has steadily increased her lead as favorite, with the latest negatives only having a small impact on the odds.

In the next image, Huckabee is blue, Thompson is black, and Giuliani is red. We can see money on Huck in the summer would’ve been quite the deal, whereas Thompson’s odds have skyrocketed in November and December. Giuliani has remained remarkably constant, with an equally constant positive gap between he and Romney (not shown).
