Larry Craig is Toast
by WonkoSteve
The discourse in Washington about Larry Craig sounds almost genteel, what with the President saying he is “disappointed.” In the Wonkosphere the story has created what can only be described as a sh*tstorm.
We have never seen the likes of The Buzz yesterday (covering August 27) when every item in all three spheres was about the Craig scandal. Had he seen this, perhaps the Senator might have revised the part of his comments where he said “I believe I can still be an effective leader for this state.” None of the bloggers in our directory seem to think so.
The Buzz for today shows a concerted effort by conservatives to change the subject to Hillary’s fund raising scandal. Dun Surber compares Mr. Hsu to Mark Rich, while Hot Air reports that Hsu’s money is now a hot potato for the Al Franken, Michael Honda, and Joe Sestak congressional campaigns.
With a couple of exceptions (like the CorrenteWire), they don’t seem too worried about the Hsu story yet in the liberal sphere. There the buzz is still firmly focused on Sen. Craig’s toilet tryst and the angst it is creating for the GOP. The Daily Kos proclaims “This is not a good time to be a Republican,” while the Carpetbagger Report anticipates a smaller GOP.
The Independent sphere also remains focused on the Craig scandal, but less exclusively. First Read (a frequent inhabitant of our One Step Ahead list) carries an item on Hsu. CNN has two stories on McCain, one on his Leno appearance, and another on release of his interrogation video. CNN is also reporting yet another staff change in the Thompson “exploratory committee” and the Union Leader’s advise that Fred had better debate–or else.
Meanwhile, most of the current Hot Links, extracted from across the Wonkosphere, are on the Craig story. Those who have called for his resignation on the grounds that it’s distracting the Republicans are right: My reading is that the Hsu story would be the main buzz-generator right now were it not for the Craig scandal.
